Sensei Cub, Neidan, owns and operates Brunswick Shotokan Karate. Born and raised in Brunswick, he has been teaching in the Midcoast area for 33 yrs and is the Head Instructor.

He began his training at the age of 9 at the Brunswick Recreation Center under Sensei Sonny Moody and Sensei Ray Blanger. This was a monumental moment in Cub Sensei's life as he was headed in the wrong direction. There were periods of time where he was homeless as a teen. It was the stability that he received through this program that allowed him to rise above the lack of parental guidance during his teen years.

At age 17, Sensei Cub joined the US Army 82nd Airborne Division and continued on with his studies of Karate. In 1976 he was promoted to first degree black belt by Sensei Sevaaetasi, Master Kenneth Funakoshi

In 1991 Sensei Cub was recognized with his Certified Instructor Award from Master Kennth Funakoshi of the Funakoshi Shotokan Karate Association. In 2010 Sensei Cub was Promoted to 3rd degree Black belt in Kempo from Master Provencio of the Okinawa Kempo Karate association and all Japan Karate Federation

In addition to owning and operating Brunswick Shotokan Karate School, Sensei Cub has taught Shotokan Karate for youths at:

  • Bowdoin College for Upward Bound.

  • Hyde School as part of a private leardership school.

  • Longfellow Elementary school in Brunswick.

  • The University Of Maine Orono.

  • The University Maine Farmington.

  • BCC in Bangor Maine.

While serving his country, Sensei Cub trained the elite soilders of the 5th and 6th special forces and 82nd Airborne Division Troops; He provided security as a counter sniper for President Richard M Nixon at his Inaugural ceremony; Completed a tour of duty with the Elite 82nd Airborne Division; Serverd as a Tow Gunner In the Republic Vietnam; Attended jump school, recon school and sniper school.

During his service, he had the honor of developing an incredible friendship with an instructor named Sensei Talitonu. Over the years, Sensei Cub lived with his family and served as his best man at his wedding. Sensei Sevaaetasi became one of the highest ranking NCO in the Army, a Command Sargent Major. Tragically, Sevaaetasi drowned in American Samoa while home on leave in February 2000. He was a friend who in the end became a brother. Sensei Cub strives to keep his memory and love for karate alive through his teachings and dedication to the local youth.
